One Layer is Enough for us

So many car coating companies tout the “multi-layer” strategy to effective car coating.  On the surface, this sounds like a good idea.  But, a deeper look into the multi-layer concept a host of problems stare back at you.  So many questions come to mind:

  1.  Why are so many layers required?  (Some have more than 7)
  2. Why so many hardness layers available?  Why not put on the best and forget the other hardness?
  3. Why charge so much for each layer?  To put on another layer is easy and shouldn’t be hundreds of ringgit or dollars?  Hardly any labor or materials required.

We have a pretty good idea why so many car coating companies offer and recommend multi-layers.  First, they can charge the unsuspecting customer more by offering extra layers.  And since they don’t have concentrated SiO2 (Silica), their coatings are weak and need extra layers to achieve a good result.  Sierra Glow spends extra money and time to offer our customers SiO2 that is almost 100% pure (98.5%).  While the heating technique to achieve this is expensive and time consuming, we can achieve the best shine and protection with our coating because of this one fact.

Car Coating: 98.5 Purity Achieved. Wow!

100_4455-copy-1“Into the Weeds’ is an English expression meaning…have a real close and detailed look at something.  One goes into the weeds when you want to find out the details.  Let’s go into the weeds and learn about SG 98.5…the name of the world’s best car coating chemical made by Sierra Glow, our 6th generation car coating.
First, let’s understand the chemical composition of glass coating, Si02. Almost all car coating, ceramic coating, glass coating, quartz coating, whatever you call it IS the chemical formula, Si02.  For those familiar with some chemistry, Si stands for silica and it is surrounded with two molecules of Oxygen. Silica is the main ingredient of glass, so Si02 is geneally known as liquid glass. Our latest achievement is unsurpassed at 98.5% purity.  Sierra Glow not just beats the competitors, we annihilate.
Such purity levels are unheard of in the car coating market, and this achievement makes our car coating dry in minutes once applied.  That is why at Sierra Glow we don’t need infra red, thermal,  UV lights or 4 hours to achieve  drying and hardening.  Those who have less purity will have a longer drying time, lights, heat, fans to assist.
Quick hsio2ardness is important, as there is less danger of contaminants mixing and landing on the car coating and embedding in the car coat. Also, because drying is so fast (within minutes) using SG 98.5, our turn around time is faster. Because of the high purity percentage, hardness is superior. Finally, our purity level results in MORE Si02 being applied.
Deeper into the weeds …what is the other 1.5%?  Flourine is a gas that helps with water beading and hydrophobia and comes from flourite.  Flourite is 24th most common element and was discovered in 1529 and flourine amounts to a $15 billion is sales a year. It is not unusual and you will find it in your toothpaste and thousands of other products.
The third ingredient is a small, small, tiny, tiny drop of emulsion. This emulsion prevents our Si02 from becoming too sticky or tacky.  This emulsion is our manufacturing trade secret, but it is critical to achieving the 98.5% silica component of our car coating. If you smell our coating chemicals there is no solvent or petrochemical smell.  With most other car coating chemicals, because they fail to achieve the purity levels, they need a lot of petrochemical based solvents to keep it in a liquid state and to give body, weight, substance to the chemicals being applied. And obviously if they have a heavy petrochemical solvent smell, the formula cannot be very pure.
Our car coating, SG5, is simply superior.  In a recent test of 10 large international car coating chemicals, we were shocked at the heavy presence of petrochemical solvents.   Ready for the shock….almost all of the car coating tested contained only less than 10% Si02.  Got that…only 10%.  What you are putting on your car is 90% petrochemical solvents and other chemicals and only a small amount is actual  Si02, car coating.

bottle or in  the air…your cascenttest_670r coating lacks purity and, therefore Si02. We notice that many car coating companies use not only heating lights but also large ventilation fans to clear the air of the petrochemical vapours.  Come to Sierra Glow, no heating lights, no ventilation fans, coating is dry in 10 minutes!  These are all evidence of our purity Si02 levels.
One final fact about our SG 98.5.  Many of our competitors will use 20 – 30 cc of their car coating chemicals.  But because the Si02 content is so low, only 1 to 3 grams of Si02 is applied to the surface of the typcial car. Because of our 98.5%, 8  – 10 grams of Si02 will be applied.  This results in better shine, better hydrophobia and much more protection of your clear coat. Because there is more Si02, it lasts longer.

This short video explains why we are now coating so many wrapped cars.  Because if you simply apply car coating on top of the wrap, it will not bind with the wrap.  But after Blue Flame, even a wrapped car can hold the car coating….and this will allow water sheeting and reduce water marks.  Water marks are a big problem for all cars but especially wrapped cars…With Blue Flame, water easily runs off …., but the water won’t roll off until the car is properly coated.

Car Coating: Happiness is a Weekly Event

Car Coating Maintenance: Washing Your Car

We love to tell our customers that all you have to do to protect your car coating by Sierraglow is to Wash regularly.  While this is true, there are ways to wash and ways NOT TO wash.  Also, you do need to be aware of bird poo and tree sap and tar and other crap that can land on your car.  Most need to be wash off quickly.  But, generally, all you need to do to keep your car beading and shining is to wash.  But, as in most aspects of modern life, it is more complicated than just washing.

We have to wash correctly.  I have posted early on the two bucket approach.  This post you may also want to review or look at if you haven’t seen it.  I am posting Chris Fix’s video on his top ten car wash mistakes…but it is important to learn his Number 1 mistake:

  1. taking your car to the car wash.  soapy car

Sure, if you have an old second hand car that you don’t really car about…go ahead, go to the nearby car wash.  But, if you have a nice car….Don’t go there!  Do it yourself.

No good will come from taking your car to the local car wash.  I was discussing this issue this morning with our Sifu, Mr. Choong…and he told me that frankly that there isn’t a car wash in PJ he would recommend.  Wow!  Blanket rejection.

He says that he always tells our customers to get their own microfibre and give it to the car wash people to uses.  This cuts down on the errors/mistakes/swirls but doesn’t eliminate them.

Why are car washing so bad?  First, they are a volume business…they have to do your car fast.  Speed is everything.  So, to slowly wash the cloth, inspect it for dirt, gentle snap it to remove dust, grit from the cloth…they can’t be bothered.  If you look at their operation, most don’t even have one bucket and forget about 2.  They simple use one cloth…dampen your car and wash….never once cleaning their cloth.  Most don’t even have microfibre.

So, rule number one, if you care about your car, don’t go to a car wash.

But, we haven’t been to them all. Maybe we are wrong.  Let us know if you have a car wash you are happy with and actually do a good job.  I used one for awhile behind Damansara Intan…I would give it a 6 or 7….but never an 8.  Let us know and we will look the shop over.  Let’s see if we can find a car wash that actually washes and cleans your car without swirls and marks.  I am hoping one or more of you have a place that I can take my car.  But, until I find one, I love my car and my Sierraglow car coating enough to just do the wash myself.

Car Coating: Lotus Effect

It has been the holy grail of car detailing for many years.  Even in the old days of wax and polish before car coating came along, many waxers and polishers sought beading.  Today car coating companies have a new word they like to use: hydrophobia (fear of water).  And, as everyone knows, the car polishing, car detailing and the car coating industry loves to use hyperbole and exaggeration as a way to drive business to their doors.  Hydrophobia is water bead blue 4not a big enough word for these car detailers and car coating experts, they say “super-hydrophobia” or “extreme-hydrophobia.”

For most of us, the common driver of today, we understand the idea of water beading and we seek this as our standard.  To have water beading means simply that the water will stay as beads on top of the car, and most of this will run off especially if it has stopped raining and the car is moving.

If our car achieves something like the dark car shown here, then we are more than happy as we know that our clear coat and our paint has a good protection from the rain and other elements.  This is what we want.

Howebad beadingver, this is not what we usually achieve.  If we use a wax or a polish, we may get nice beading for a week or so, but pretty soon our car paint will not show an “phobia” to water, and our car will start to look like this.   The beads are not perky and full, but flat, like a flat tire.  The water pools.  These pools are especially dangerous, as in the rain one finds chemicals and minerals.   So when the rain dries or is burned off (car under the sun), the residue chemicals and minerals are left behind.  We have all heard and read about acid rain, when it isn’t a joke for a car that is has been left under the sun with these pools of acidic rain water.  The left over residue actually gets “burned” into the clear coat.  Left for days under the sun, the etch may even reach the paint.  Yuk!

We have all seen cars that don’t bead, and we have all seen cars that shine and bead.  Beading and shining go together like nasi and lemak, yes.  Seldom do we see a car that beads but doesn’t shine or vice-versa.  Either the car shines or it is dull.

Car coating specialists love new words and concepts (super-hydrophobia), so they have come up with the “lotus effect.”  The lotus plant has really big leaves and is made in such a way that rain can not penetrate at all the leave.  The rain drops sit on top as a perfect round ball, and most of the rain will just bounce off.  The lotus leaf is truly amazing, and all car detailers and car coating expects desire the lotus effect.

Car Coating Wins (in battle against Car Wax

ford-assembly-lineSince the car came off Henry Ford’s assembly line, car wax was the solution to keeping the paint in good shape.  Given this long history with polishing and waxing cars, it is no wonder that the vast majority of today’s drivers choose car wax.  They simply don’t know about car coating as a better alternatives to the old fashioned car wax.  But, car wax is really not just a old technology, it is a poor choice in protecting your car. This post describes the disadvantages of using waxes and polishes to protect your car.

First, let’s understand the difference between a wax and a polish.  Polishes are “gritty” and actually buff up the car’s paint or clear coat to take off the oxidation or dullness of the gloss.  With the gritty polish in the compounds, the shine comes back some.  However, this has to be done very carefully.  If too much force is applied or a rotary polisher used, too much clear coat or paint can be taken off, and this can cause swirls and actually create less shine, not more.  So, if you are using polish or have your car “polished” some degree of car is important.

Wax is different than polish.  Car wax is a non-abrasive coating usually containing Carnauba and other waxes. It is applied after washing your car and dries to a thin, milky-white layer when applied properly and is then wiped or buffed off.  The glaze creates a thin, harden layer of reflective shine on top of the car.  The wax has some hydrophobic effect and offers some protection from the elements: sun, bird poo and tree sap.  Wax looks good on top of your car paint.

So, what is the problem.  Wax and polish are temporary.  They will not last on top of your car.  Within weeks, the wax has worn off.  If it has rained a lot (very common in Malaysia), the expensive wax just washes off the car leaving the car paint exposed. Literally within a month your expensive RM 400 wax can be gone.  And, if you use a cheaper wax, your RM 200 car paint protection wax is gone.  Either way, it is money down the drain.

We wax our cars because we don’t know there is an alternative to wax.  More on this later…

Even the wax companies recommend that you wax your car ever 3 months.  This means you need to take your car in for “the wax” at least 4 times a year.  If each wax costs RM 200, you will be spending RM 800 a year on a temporary solution.  Within 5 years, your bill in maintaining your car shine is RM 4,000.00.  But, this doesn’t include the cost and the requirement to polish your car.  Polishing should be at least yearly or twice a year.  Polishing can easily add RM 400 a year to your cost, so now, the basic requirement for good car paint protection becomes RM 6,000 over 5 years.  This is getting expensiveBecause of this cost, many Malaysians decide to stretch out the intervals between waxing.  So instead of 3 months (industrial standard), they delay this to 5 or 6 months.  They wait til the car has no shine left, or until there is no water beading.  Just look at the car driving around town, a you will see many, many cars that don’t bead.  And, these are new, expensive cars we see so often.

Look at the car above, if that bird poo stays on this unprotected car for 24 hours, the “etch” will be serious!

The problem with wax and with polish is that both of them are TEMPORARY and because they are TEMPORARY, you have to polish and wax repeatedly.  Forget or delay is not good.

Car Coating by Sierraglow is more or less permanent.  We guarantee it (with only a few T&Cs) for 5 years.   2.  The money adds up and frankly the wax really just doesn’t do much to save your car paint and your investment.
